Minas Gerais Agency | Gross value of agricultural production in Minas Gerais breaks records and exceeds R$ 132 billion

The gross value of production (GPV) for agriculture and livestock in Minas Gerais reached a record of R$ 132.3 billion in 2022, an increase of 8.6% compared to the previous year. The results are a result of the good performance of coffee and soy. Minas Gerais was responsible for 11.4% of the national VPB, which ranks fourth in the ranking of states.

The indicator represents an estimate of income generation in rural areas and its calculation is made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), based on data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the National Supply Company (Conab ) and the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea/USP).

Crops

Among the segments of agriculture and livestock, crops accounted for 66% of income in Minas Gerais. Last year, revenue reached R$ 87.5 billion, 13.3% higher than in 2021. In the assessment of the superintendent of Innovation and Agricultural Economy at Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa)Feliciano Nogueira, the positive results of the VBP, this year, are due to the good prices practiced in the market, in addition to the increase in production.

“The main product in the composition of the state indicator, the GDP of coffee amounted to R$29 billion in 2022, with a growth of 22% compared to the previous year. This positive result is due to the high prices practiced throughout the year in the local market. According to Cepea, from January to December 2022 there was a 31% increase in the average price of a bag of coffee, compared to the same period of the previous year. In February 2022, the highest monthly average of the period was recorded, reaching BRL 1,485 per 60 kilogram bag,” explains the Seapa superintendent.

Soy

Soy ranks second in the agricultural segment, with a gross production value of BRL 22 billion (5.4% higher than in 2021), driven by the record harvest. This good result is due to the production of 7.6 million tonnes in the 2021/2022 harvest (8.1% higher than the previous harvest) and the high prices that were practiced in the market.

Sugarcane also recorded growth, with GDP reaching R$12.2 billion (19% higher than the previous crop).

Products that stood out with an increase in the GDP of the agricultural segment in 2022: potatoes (22%), bananas (45%), tomatoes (29%), oranges (10%), cotton (2%), wheat (69). % ), cassava (47%) and rice (10%).

Decreases were recorded for maize (3%), beans (9%), grapes (1%) and peanuts (9%).

Sweep

In livestock, there was an increase of 0.4% in the state GDP, which reached R$ 44.8 billion. With a share of 38% in the segment indicator, milk amounted to R$17.1 billion in 2022, an increase of 10.3%. The positive result was driven by the high price applied in the market, due to the lower supply of the product in the field.

With the high cost of production and increased demand, egg prices remained high in 2022, contributing to the positive VBP result, which reached R$ 1.8 billion (+7.1%).

As for meat, there was a decrease. The gross income from beef amounted to BRL 14.1 billion in 2022, 4.5% lower than the previous year. Performance was affected by the low consumption of protein, justified by the reduction in the purchasing power of the population, caused by high inflation.

Chicken GDP was R$8.2 billion, 6.4% lower than last year’s value. As for pork, revenue amounted to R$ 3.7 billion, a decrease of 7.4%.
